Selenium WebDriver

Selenium WebDriver is quickly becoming the preferred tool for testing web applications. I was first introduced to Selenium around 2012 while trying to learn some automation for an application I was testing. I had looked at other open source tools like Sahi, Sikuli, White Framework and a few others at the time but none resonated well with me. However, with Selenium, I was able to write short but effective scripts that had me excited for the future possibilities with the API. As I was back then, I am still excited to be working with Selenium WebDriver but at a much higher level.

I briefly wanted to mention why Selenium WebDriver is such an awesome tool that will only get better.

  • Selenium is open source (Free!).
  • It supports mobile devices.
  • Can execute tests in parallel using Selenium Grid.
  • Can be extended for use with various technologies.
  • Has abilities to execute scripts.

The major limitation to Selenium WebDriver is that it cannot automate Desktop applications, solely web applications.
